Learning To Trade Stocks

Learning to srade stocks is no easy matter. But it’s not impossible. You have to set yourself out to spend some time to do research and to onitor your positions every once in a while. I have been trading stocks for over 15 years. I can remember my early years of trading. I would get into a position and then when I saw that it was going against me, I would get out, often at the very wrong time. I say that because the next day or week the stock surpassed where I had bought it from.

Learning to trade stocks requires some skill but it also requires you to shed some of your ingrained, inbred emotions. It’s these very emotions that caused me to sell stocks too early in by beginning days of trading. I have overcome these emotions now and I have a set of rules that I follow religiously. That doesn’t mean that I can’t change the rules of my system but I have to give myself a good reason to do so. If I don’t change my system than I stick to them. That is how I keep emotions out of the equation.

The most important way to help yourself when learning to trade stocks is to come up with your own system and practice. But practicing with real money can be costly. Some people refer to this as your tuition but what if you could avoid putting real money on the line and still get the practice you need?

A way to do that is by a concept known as paper trading. Now, there are critics of paper trading that state that because you are not putting real money on the line you will not have the same kinds of emotions that you would had you put your hard earned cash in. They also state that you will not get the same kind of fills that you would when you trade for real. There is some truth to these statements but it shouldn’t stop you from pursuing paper trading because there are ways to reduce the aspects of paper trading that are criticized.

To counter the first item, paper trading is still experience. Yes, the emotions are not the same but what you are really doing is trying to get a feel for whether your system is working or going to work. The second item’s counterpoint is if you take the midpoint of the bid and ask at any given time of the day or at the close, you would likely get filled at those levels had you traded real money. That’s because it falls within the range of the bid/ask spread. I have used this technique when trad 1000 ing for real and with the exception of super fast moving stocks, I almost always got filled.

I think if you want to go about learning to trade stocks you need a system and you need to be able to practice trading. You want to be able to do both of these without putting up a whole lot of capital (none if you can get away with it). One system that I have found that is indispensible and reliable is the CANSLIM method. This method has been helping people learning how to trade stocks to profit.

Why I’m a Day Trader since 1986?

You perhaps warned by your friends, relatives or stock market advisers that day trading is risky. However, from my personal experience, I found it is no more risky than long-term investment in volatile stock or futures provided you have right system in place. Day traders, are people who buy and sell stocks of various companies all day long. There are mainly two types of day traders – scalpers and momentum traders, Scalpers buys and sells very quickly whereas momentum traders buy stock that is moving up or down during the day.

The main objective of day trader is to maximize profit with minimum risk. As an active and experienced online day trader, I am sharing with you my recommendations so that you can be successful in day trading.

I would rather say investment in equity is always risky because of erratic and sometimes unpredictable nature of market forces. On the contrary, investments in banks allow money to grow at a small rate, while that rate is guaranteed, and the local government generally protects the money. However, you need to invest some portion of your capital in capital market for wealth building.

Let us examine why short term and long-term investment pose the same risk in terms of capital loss. We will consider a hypothetical scenario to explain the point. Let’s assume you are a value investor and invested in a company A. On 25th July’07, company A is opened at $27 in the morning, and then plummets to $24 within a few hours due to a large class action lawsuit being filed against them. If the company A goes to bankrupt because of said lawsuit, share of company A will fall drastically. In this situation, all kinds of share market investors will loose their capital because the stock is worthless now.

Stock pick based company performance is very crucial for value investors but in case of day trading technical analysis and related signal is most important. Most traders follow Fibonacci series to predict stock movement. Even in the above case, day trader might protect their capital well because they are normally very cautious and open to all kinds of market news and signals. Day traders mainly work based on market intelligence and their own day trading rules.

If you want to be a good day trader, you need to be disciplined, quick to learn from various situations, ready to take advice from your day trading coach. Having correct and timely information is extremely important to take any financial decision. Most day traders close their positions within the day i.e. they either sell or cover their short position. This is the major benefits of short term day trader is that the loss taken during one day is only for that day and it is not magnified over the next trading day. Day trading adds velocity to the money and smart investors always prefer to roll money in market so that they can pump in the money to a suitable opportunity. Basically, it means taking a position for a few months to a few years. This way, the two risky sides of the timeline are taken out, and you can gain from the lion’s share of the price moves that good stocks always make.

There is still an element of risk involved, but this risk can be largely removed from your trading. Sound principles of money management, combined with methodical research, stock picking and stock selling are all that are required.

Anyone can trade in a way that is profitable and risk controlled. The best way to accumulate capital to provide the income needed to be rich quickly is to speculate in property or stocks in an intelligent and risk controlled way.

Far more people get rich using these routes than with any other method. The key is to get the right information from the right source.

The threshold question to ponder before you decide to invest in the stock market is whether or not you are the investor type. For some people the stock market may not be suited to their personality. Sure, there are folk tales you may hear about the guy who bought XYZ Company stock for $5 and sold it 60 days later for $50 a share. This scenario probably has happened , but it is not the reality of being an investor. The following points should be considered when you are considering becoming an investor.

Are you self-disciplined in your thinking?

The first step anyone must take into account is their own personality. Are you objectively a person who is organized in your thinking? Do you know how much money you have to invest? Do you know how to set objectives in your finances? Have you set goals for savings and followed through on those objectives? An investor has to have a clear set of objectives in their choice of investments. Is the amount of money you intend to invest a one time wind fall? Are you able to set aside a certain amount of money each month to investing that is disposable income?

In effect what you will be doing is moving some of your pass book savings to an investment. Patterns development in peoples lives. Are you able to transfer your savings pattern to include a regular investment in the stock market? If you are currently earning a small percentage on your pass book savings account what rate of return would you be satisfied in receiving? The key to investing is to know your expenses and income and decide how much money is disposable income. It is this excess that will be your investment dollars.

Are you able to set goals and listen to good advise?

Once you have determined that investing may be a possible avenue for you to consider the next step is setting goals. A goal is the objective of your investment. After you have gathered all the information you believe is necessary for your decision can you apply your personal goals with the information presented and make a final decision?

This may seem like an odd inquiry, can you make a final decision? Unfortunately, some people will feel quite comfortable going to a car show room and purchase a $30,000 automobile. The color, impression, and internal motivators. But when it comes to investing, the buy is not as dazzling. It takes consideration to commit $30,000 to an investment in paper form even though you may be purchasing stock in the flashy car company.

Can You Let Go?

The final and perhaps most important aspect of deciding if you are a stock investor is, YOU. After you have gone through all of the self analysis, goals, research and advice of others and made your final decision the next step is critical. Do you have the personality to allow your investment to take its course? Can you sleep at night? Unless you are a day trader who plays the upside and downside of the stock market and I would not recommend this to anyone starting out.

You have to be able to roll with the punches. Trust your instincts and review your investment on a monthly or quarterly basis. If you buy individual stocks, place a limit order on the account. A limit order allows your broker or on-line account to sell if the price goes down.

The mutual fund investment works differently that buying individual stocks. If you are satisfied that your choice of a fund met all of your criteria for investing let it alone and review it only periodically. If your mutual fund for any reason meets with unexpected long term problems you can change funds. I would review the fund on a quarterly basis and discuss this with the fund account manager or representative.

This is the investor personality that you need to have in order to have a lifetime of success in the stock market. If you have it, it works. If you don’t, try another type of investment.
